Wishing you in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, who redeemed us so we could worship the Father in Heaven.
We are looking at the names being called by the Character of God.
*Note*: These are not names of God - rather these are words that refer to His character.
Today we see the word “Shekinah”
English Meaning : The glory of God, presence of God or His manifestation in physical form. The majestic presence or manifestation of God which has descended to "dwell" among men.
Used by the later Jews to designate the visible symbol of God's presence in the tabernacle, and afterwards in Solomon's temple.
In the classical Hebrew and Aramaic manuscripts of the Old and New Testaments, the word shekinah is actually not found. It was first introduced by Jewish rabbis through targums and literature in the period between the completion of the Old Testament and the onset of the New Testament.
*What is Targums?*
an ancient Aramaic paraphrase or interpretation of the Hebrew Bible, of a type made from about the 1st century AD when Hebrew was ceasing to be a spoken language.
The etymology of “Shekinah” is from the Hebrew word shākan, which means“to reside or permanently stay.”
The rabbis used the term Shekinah to describe the following to the Jewish people:
- The presence of God amongst His people ( Exodus 19:16-18; 40:34-38; 1Kings 6:13)
- The glory of God dwelling in the Temple (2Chronicles 7:1)
- How God dwells in the mountain (Psalms 68.16-18; Joel 3:17)
*How is Shekinah Glory portrayed in the Bible?*
The divine presence of God on earth is depicted through the following:
- As a cloud (Exodus 24:16-18; Exodus 33:9; 1Kings 8:10-13)
- As a pillar of smoke and fire (Exodus 13:21-22)
- As fire and a burning bush (Zechariah 2:5; Exodus 3:2)
*Where is Shekinah Glory first mentioned in the Bible?*
The first biblical account of Shekinah Glory is recorded in Exodus after the Israelites had left the shackles of slavery in Egypt. God appeared to them as a pillar of cloud and fire as they were camped at Etham.
Few references denoting the meaning : Exo 14:20; 40:34-38; Lev 9:23,24; Num 14:10; 16:19, 42.
Then let us come near to the seat of grace without fear, so that mercy may be given to us, and we may get grace for our help in time of need. Hebrews 4:16
