#128 Question:
Dear
Beloved Brother Please explain
Mark
10:18 And Jesus said to him, Why do you say I am good? no one is good but one,
and that is God.
Answer:
We
all know that New Testament was written in Greek/Aramaic.
The
Greek word translated in English as “good” is “agathos,”
which
means - of good constitution / nature / useful / salutary / good / pleasant / agreeable
/ joyful / happy / excellent / distinguished
/ upright / honourable.
Jesus
used this same Greek word when He spoke about Father at Matthew 5:45; 12:35; 22:10;
25:21, 23.
Same
way,
Luke
use this word agathos when he mentions of Joseph and Barnabas at Luke 23:50;
Acts 11:24.
Paul
also used this same word when he wrote, “…though perhaps for a good person one
would dare even to die” (Romans 5:7).
Therefore,
it’s clear how the word “good” is used in Scripture to describe imperfect
human beings as well.
So
why did Jesus say to the rich young ruler
- Why do you call me good? No one is good except God alone” (Mark
10:18)?
Agathos
cannot be used to sinful (Rom 3:23) man when compared to God who is the ultimate
goodness and HOLY.
Moreover,
Jesus IS God (John 1:1, 14; 10:30; 17:11, 22; 14:9; Philippians 2:6; 2
Corinthians 4:4; Colossians 1:15, 19).
He
was repeatedly mentioning in His preaching and by the miracles (Mark
2:5-12).
So,
when the rich young ruler initially addressed Him as “Good Teacher” (Mark
10:17), Jesus immediately proclaim Himself as Deity and replied, “Why do you
call me good? No one is good except God alone” (v. 18), a definite hint
to him and anyone else listening there that the ruler was addressing Deity when
he spoke to Jesus.
Therefore,
we firmly know that “No one is good except God alone”
